FIRST THERE WAS THE HOSPITAL… KING’S HOSPITAL WAS ESTABLISHED in 1996 by Drs. Hubert Morquette and Junie Hyacinthe. This Haitian couple saw a need in Port-au-Prince to serve the extremely disadvantaged. People began bringing their children for treatment of malaria, typhoid, and malnourishment; many of these kids barely hanging on to life. Par- ents often abandoned their children at the hospital when they could no longer care for them. Head nurse Priscille Hyacinthe felt a real burden for these children. The story goes that one day she was cry- ing and a stranger approached her. He asked why she was crying. His reaction surprised her. “Sister, there is a place right behind this hospital that is for rent and I will make sure that you can afford it.” The King’s Garden Orphanage began there with three large rooms in 2001. Dr. Morquette, serving as acting director of World Relief in Haiti, initiated a partnership with Christ Community Church in St. Charles, Illinois. Sponsorships were developed to help the aban- doned children. In 2004 it was moved to a three-acre Haitian estate and by 2014 was home to 37 children. “I KNOW IF I DIDN’T HAVE KING’S GARDEN, I WOULD NOT HAVE THE LIFE I HAVE RIGHT NOW.
